As Expected, January Market Downturn Did Not Spill into February

Last month, I wrote about January, 2014 as the worst start to a year since 2009. The Dow and S&P were both down, but I expressed confidence that the downturn would be short-lived. February is now behind us, and my prediction was accurate. In February, we made up the ground we lost in January. In fact, the S&P closed at the end of February at a record high of just under 1860 points (CNN, February 28, 2014). Bob_W

As always, we remain optimistic and cautious at the same time. There is more turmoil on the world front with the situation in Russia and the Ukraine. Where that will lead remains to be seen, but as I always say, we at Wamhoff don’t react to isolated incidents. We will keep our eyes on the situation and what impact, if any, it may have.

Back at home, we see an economy that is moving along slowly in the right direction, but it’s still fragile. I believe that by the end of 2014, we will see more improvement. When it comes to your investments, there are many things on the horizon, and things that are weighing heavily on my mind. I’m still very concerned about the bond market’s low rate of return. We will be looking to shift portions of some portfolios to other investment options.

We also have many things happening for Just Because We Care. In February, Mandy Murphey from Fox 2 News aired a series of stories she filmed while in Honduras with us in January. If you haven’t had a chance to watch them, visit to see the clips. Mandy did a great job telling the story, and we’re very grateful to her and her photographer Dave Sharp for traveling to Timmy’s Mountain with us.

Finally, don’t forget about our very first 5K / 10K and 1 mile fun run coming up on March 29th. Dubbed the Honduran Street Party Run, the race will begin and end at Streets of St. Charles and will feature great music, food, drinks and entertainment. Sign up today to run or walk with us, and be sure to tell all your friends! And believe it or not, I’ll be participating! That’s right, I’ll be doing my very first 5K, so even if you’re not running, come out and see how I do, and join us for the after-party. It’s going to be a great time!

Stay healthy, wealthy and wise, and certainly, stay tuned.
